UMF Tacoma | Newbie Jams ($40)
Newbie Jams are geared toward advanced beginner to intermediate-level players and offers drummers, bassists, guitarists, keyboardists, and horn players a non-competitive, supportive, and fun way to explore the fundamentals of jamming and playing music collectively through a variety of musical styles and genres.
These sessions provide opportunities to explore and experiment with improvisation through a variety of chord progressions and sequences, rhythmic patterns, musical keys, scales, and time signatures without adhering to a specific style of music.
We might explore electric blues, rock, funk, groove and syncopation or a combination of these styles during a session. Newbie Jams are designed around a full band environment and are meant for recreational musicians who are interested in the art of improvisation. The goal is to create unique musical spaces for jam members to interact and collaborate within and creating something new as a collective unit each time. It all adds up to the thrill and magic of jamming that we'll uncover with you!
We do encourage players who want to participate in a Newbie Jam session to have had some previous collective playing experience or that you are confident enough to jump right in (we won't discriminate). You should have a fundamental grasp of your instrument and have the ability to change chords (open and barre) cleanly; some basic knowledge of major and minor scales, the ability to play in time, know some basic rudiments, and have semi-advanced listening (ear) skills. Contact us with any questions you might have prior to signing up.
